It’s kind of like a dream come true, right? It’s amazing, and it keeps me interested in drawing. I used to take photos of girls. One of those photos was of this girl with these big eyes and wide smile, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is my favorite girl.’ Then, I decided to turn that photo into a comic book. And that’s the beginning of my comic book career.
I’ve also drawn for my mom, too, I think.
Do you keep any of your father’s drawings in your home to remind you of your childhood?
My aunt has these drawings I used to look at when I was a little girl that have never left my parents’ house, and I’ve actually found a few of these things and some of them are kind of blurry but they all tell me the same story. They’re really funny because I know how bad some of my father’s drawings were. They were really pretty bad. He wasn’t a good artist, and when he would draw, the drawing would be very sloppy and the color was not right.
How much are father and daughter talking these days?
I think they’re pretty active. My father has always been a very active man, and he’s a real person. And my mother has always been a very calm lady, but when they were going through their divorce, they were actually talking like normal, as though they never went through a divorce. But when you hear stories about a divorce you think, “Oh, this is a terrible thing,” but then when those stories are told in a positive manner you tend to believe them.
How do you stay mentally fit in a busy life?
It doesn’t really matter what you’re doing, as long as you’re able to stay on your toes. I mean, I’m kind of like a kid who got hit and now I’m the older child. Or I guess you could say I’m just a big tough guy who has a lot of energy and strength and all of that. And I’m actually very active while being pretty balanced off of that energy, a little bit of depression. When you think about it, you think about depression and you think about what your life might have been like were it healthy. That is pretty close to being depressed.
What motivates you to keep writing despite all of this?
Well, I don’t know. I feel like my life is really in the past. I don’t have
