A car designed for a man with a full head of hair and a beard is a lot easier to draw than one built for a young man with a short beard and no hair.
For the past 30 years, the popular Mustang has been designed to look like a traditional four wheel-drive sedan with a long, thin bumper and a short, wide hood.
But that is what most people think of when they think of the Mustang.
No matter the style, the basic outline is the same:
It’s a 4×4 with front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive
A long hood, short wheelbase and a single headlight
It’s very tall.
It’s tall but not too tall.
We do not want it too tall or too short.
For this article, I’m going to concentrate on the bodywork. Why? Because it’s the most unique part of the Ford Mustang.
The front fascia is an entirely new design. Most of the existing fascia was taken away in the early 70’s.
It had been there for at least 40 years. The original bodywork made its debut in 1975, and was originally intended to remain as a part of the entire rear wheel drive Mustang car line-up. But things got out of hand.
As an enthusiast of modern day automotive design, some of the changes of the 1970’s were welcome.
Now, these changes were not all that surprising
for a car of the era. The long hood and short wheelbase were the most obvious changes to a Mustang.
They were also quite significant.
Most Mustang enthusiasts are aware that the 1973 Mustang was the first production car to use an automatic transmission.
But the auto industry at the time was still a fairly young, conservative industry. Automakers wanted to stay out of the way of regulators like the EPA.
All new cars with a transmission required an expensive and complicated upgrade. And most cars with an automatic transmission had a big, bulky, and heavy shift knob.
The 1973 Mustang was a complete departure. All its key parts were mounted below the front wheel, where they were easily accessible at the driver’s side or rear.
The original design was simple, flat, and efficient.
And that simplicity was a conscious decision. The 1973 Mustang had already proved its mettle in a grueling three-day drag race held at Daytona’s famous Road America.
