I’ve watched a lot of people make their own film, but not a lot of people understand their craft.
My philosophy is that people who are going to work in film are not looking to make a cheap movie. They’re looking to make a work that will be noticed by people who are curious how we make video games.
They’re looking for something that will hold a conversation, not make a box office success. They’re looking for something that will be an inspiration to other filmmakers.
I am a film person first and foremost who does what I do in filmmaking to make those connections and connections that I want to make.
I want people, when they see their name called, to feel a connection. To have faith in me, in a world where we have different perspectives. To have faith in my own ability to express an idea.
It doesn’t matter how well you made a movie. If you make something that has a real impact and I think it’s going to move people, that is what I want.
I don’t care what other people think about a movie. All I care is how I do it and how far I can push myself and go.
What’s the hardest part about being a filmmaker?
The hardest part is being out of time. It’s like having a family member who’s out of time with you, and no one knows what to do.
You just kind of sit on your hands and wait to see what happens next.
I know you’re very busy.
I am, and I know that. I want to make sure I’m focusing on the things that have the largest impact for me, so there’s a purpose and I know they’re all important.
What has been the biggest challenge in filmmaking so far?
My family’s always been a challenge and has been for me, and it’s been one I’ve fought with each day of my life. You know, the days where I have to tell everyone my story, that’s when I feel the pressure of working on something that makes a contribution, but I don’t want to do that for a long time.
On a personal level, being able to do this thing you always wanted to do makes you want to try and do it, even if that means living through a couple of rough breaks.
