How do you become a cinematographer?

Peter Werner - School of Filmmaking - UNCSA

I’m a filmmaker. It’s my job to make movies. My job is to make movies. It’s more than just the cinematography of it. You have to have a story. That’s not so easy, is it? And so I look at this job not only as an opportunity, but I look at it also as an obligation, it was created for me to tell a story, and I can’t let anything get in the way of that.

With that said my dad was a pioneer of film, and he always said, if you want to do great movies, you need to live by the rules of the game. You need to stay up-to-date with the latest stuff. You have to be constantly adapting, constantly working to keep moving forward until you’re really on your way, and that’s what I look forward to, I look at this as a job, and an honour.

Tell us more about the character of Michael J. Fox.

I think he’s sort of that guy, you know, in the old movies, people could not stop talking about him and if they didn’t like him they could just do what they wanted, but now, I don’t want to leave anything on the table because I’ve got something else planned for the script.

It’s a very unique character to have. He was always a little bit the one who was more in a ‘I’m not afraid to talk about what I’m going through’ sort of attitude, and I think that is what the character is like. And I hope his kids will never give any indication of anything being wrong or that they don’t have the will and the resolve to face and overcome all of this pain that he has just endured. It’s very sad, so I think Michael J. Fox is the one being portrayed by me in that way.

In the screenplay, Michael comes from the same background, like I said with a little less of a certain accent. He’s a great deal younger than the other boys, but he is also just a normal guy, and maybe he’s too na├»ve. He’s definitely kind of lost, and he’s probably afraid of all these things that he can’t handle, and he’s just going to do what he has to do to survive, but also he doesn’t know what’s going on. So I think there is a depth in that character. And that’s not something I would go and make the same characters in every other movie, there
