It definitely is, but it’s really rewarding once you do it in a way that you know it’s right for you.
A lot of kids want to make films and they think that you have to be a filmmaker. But you don’t have to be the best filmmaker, you don’t need to make a documentary. A lot of people make films, but most of them are not very interesting.
And you know that when you stop having these people that say, “If you make movies, I’m going to call you and make you a movie star” — they’re going to do that because their job is to not make your movie.
Because you’re not the one that’s going to make a good movie.
Well, I did. But you’re not a filmmaker. That doesn’t matter.
Is it difficult to get a film made?
It’s certainly more difficult.
And if there are more people who say, “Oh, I want to make this film,” then it’s less expensive (for financiers). If you are producing, you’re probably producing one more shot.
So there is a huge barrier to making a film.
Yeah, it’s very hard. It’s even tougher if it has to do with finances.
I think that it has to do with the fact that it’s hard to find actors who are willing to play certain roles in TV shows. There are so many things that you have to do when you are producing. It’s like a marathon — you have to get rid of the one that you know the best but you don’t know the most about. You have to find a new one and bring him along.
It definitely takes a lot to be a part of television in Hollywood. It takes a good actor, a good director and a good set. You have to have the support of the network and you have to be able to find a director who likes to shoot TV and film.
How much can you make a year of TV?
Well, it depends on how much you take — the budget is very, very low.
I started at Paramount with a contract that said I can’t shoot the films that I’m involved (writing or producing); that I couldn’t be on TV and I couldn’t do commercial films. Paramount just sent me out to do a commercial in China and I loved it. I was still doing commercials and I didn’t know I was
