Is it more important to have a good computer or internet connection or is that not important?

Yes, if you’re working on a short film project it might be more important to have a good internet connection, if you really want to use YouTube for making short films. If you’re going to use YouTube for long films, then you should be able to stream your project and make money quickly. Some people don’t have computers with internet, so they try to have a good hard wired connection. So you could do it with cable but you’re still probably losing out on the speed, so you should consider having a good internet connection.

How do you find funding for movies or short films?

The most important thing I’ve seen in how filmmakers raise funds is finding a mentor. You can see how to find a mentor on the website here. There is a free app for iPad or iPhone called TipIt which helps you find filmmakers you like and then you’re able to get a phone conversation with them and ask questions. You can also ask around in the filmmaking community directly.

You can also find ways to raise money from your networks. One way I use is to create an email list and just ask friends or family directly to subscribe on their email list. It’s a little weird to ask somebody in-person to send you money, but it can help you and also save you a lot of heartache.

Do you think this job is becoming less of an industry?

The job has become harder to maintain for a lot of people, especially in the U.S. I’m definitely not finding it more difficult at all right now. I’m not finding that big studios don’t pay people well, so the job is still worth doing and worth it.

What has been the most rewarding part of your job so far?

I really enjoy the camaraderie and relationships that are made between the people that work on a lot of these projects. Because we’re all really close there’s always something interesting going on on set. At the end of the day it’s just a place to work. But it’s also very nice to know that you have a bunch of people who care about you and are there for you.

How many years do you think you’ll be working as an independent filmmaker?
