It’s very common in the development world to see code which is very similar to existing code, but which in one particular place is modified to have better behaviour or added functionality. We’ve seen this in software development many times in C and C++.

The most commonly used approach to making this happen is to modify one file, then to have a new file that contains code in a similar syntax, but which contains only the new features. Typically this approach will be repeated many times across a large project.

This approach is commonly used in the C and C++ programming languages. The C++ language is not free of bugs which makes this a bad practice. This can be seen by the fact that if you look up an error in the C++ specification, it will usually be in the main library or the std::vector library.

One example of this is the “strict mode” of the STL. This mode makes it impossible to specify any type parameter with the parameter type ‘T’ other than ‘array of T’s’. The “std::vector class” parameter could be used for anything, such as a user defined array type of different size. The “std::vector class”, in strict mode will not return ‘t’ even if required. I will show this example shortly, but in a nutshell: The standard library is a giant mess!

There are many examples of changes to standard library code which are just silly. In particular I have seen it happen to code that looks like:

struct Tree { // … } Tree tree; struct Circle { // …
