It’s an art form first and foremost. If you want to be a great guitar player, you have to be extremely patient and methodical. You need to keep on a daily basis practicing. I’ve been playing since I was 5 and I had to take two years off to recover from my last injury. I still love it.
Do you believe that the guitar is a modern instrument?
Yes. It’s a modern instrument that just feels different from the other old instruments. The electric guitar feels more like an instrument than a band instrument. It’s a whole new thing. Guitar players are becoming very sophisticated in understanding the sound, because we don’t have to play exactly the way we’re used to. It’s not like playing the blues or rock’n’roll. The electric guitar feels like a completely new thing. It’s also very dynamic, and I believe it has a different dynamic sound compared to the old guitars from the 70’s, where there’s more of an impact or punchy sound. They’re just not that same anymore. A lot of guitarists are going crazy, and they play so fast and so tight, and we’ve been taking a beating.
Your latest album is called “Disco Inferno.” What makes it stand out?
I’ve never done a disco record before, so it was a lot of fun! It’s a lot of fun to record, but I always thought, wow, they’re so much fun as DJs and musicians to play. I can really relate to that kind of thing. The new record was really easy to make. I’m very picky, especially in my writing, so I wanted to make it really easy to understand. It took me a week to get to this point. We have a couple other pieces that we’re working on, and they’ll start taking shape very soon. I’m excited about the work we’re doing. Everyone here is super creative.
It seems like you’re really close with the band, particularly with Alex, who had a very vocal experience with this album. Do you have anyone in particular you trust with your creative direction on new records?
Alex and I work so well together. He’s super talented. He just gets on the horn for everyone here. Everyone has the same drive and passion as each other. They just want to make music that’s going to sound great. He’s so supportive and understanding of the way I write lyrics. If it’s not sounding funny, it’s not writing
