A major chord is created by playing the root note of the chord and a note that is an augmented chord. So F#m-E is the root of the major chord. A diminished chord is created by playing the root note of the diminished chord and a note that is an augmented chord. So F#-D is the root of the diminished chord. You can create any number of changes, either major or minor, and that is the purpose of the chord names.
Guitar chords have 3 notes in common, so they have been called 3 chord names, including C, D and E.
Chords do not always belong together in order, and the order they are listed in guitar manuals and book covers does not necessarily mean that they are in that order. For example, there are many songs with Dm7 as their first chord. They could be in any order.
When does a chord belong to a particular time period?
All time periods contain different types of chords called dominant (a) and minor (a) chords.
Major chords are used when you want to have two or more chords in the upper part of your scale in order to make it easy to understand a particular line, or where a specific note should be played.
Minor chords are used when you want a change in the lower part of your scale to be easily understood.
Dm7 – Major ii V I
A major chord should sound like F#m-Eb-D where every note is an augmented chord, and the root note of the chord is a natural minor.
When you hear a C major chord playing, take note of the 3rd and the 5th of the chord, the 3rd being an augmented major Cm7 chord, and the 5th being a natural minor C3 chord.
Example: Let’s see a C major chord in the key of C major, C# m7.
Major II V I
If you play an augmented chord that has the 3rd and the 5th of the chord as natural minor, the chords are called minor ii V I chords.
For example, F# m7 is a natural minor C (3rd, 5th) chord, and this chord in G is the same.
Cm7 Gm7 Cm7 Gm7 Cm7 Bb7
