I’m surprised…you know, I feel like I’m very good at playing everything. I mean, I did my whole thing with “Rise” from the last album, so it’s the same for “I Am” and all of them. I think, yeah, there are the hard ones. There are the songs that are just amazing, but others, I couldn’t play them that well. Obviously, I don’t want to let it go to the point of exhaustion. I’m not going to go to any effort.
So when you do it for the first time, it’s almost an ego thing?
Definitely. It’s like, I can’t play these songs. I was playing at a studio and I just didn’t feel it. As soon as I played it live that’s what you hear. It’s just hard when you play it live.
It has to be a mental thing. I really don’t like that. I always start to think, “Oh yeah, this is going to be good.” And, sometimes, I’m so anxious to get started that the energy is gone and I’m just ready to go.
The most difficult and interesting to play?
The one with “I Am.” They’re so challenging. I can’t just hit a chord without thinking about the next chord. I remember trying to do that with “Rise” and it just took too much out of me, I think. The ones with “I Am” that I think are the hardest are definitely “Rise” and “Lose Yourself.”
How did you get into the writing process?
Well, the first time I wrote, it was with my friend Mark [Patton], who’s a very good friend of mine, so when I got into it I wanted to do it again, but with a little bit more of everything. I’d say, “Okay, I’m not as good as I thought I was.” It’s about being able to have a certain level at the start as a writer. I can’t get as great as I thought I would, but then you get to that, and it’s fun.
“I Am” was my first big break; I didn’t really know how to write. I just started to play and I said, “Wow, it’s fun, let’s do a song that is a little bit more challenging.” I think it’s one of the hardest ones. Then I was thinking
