I suggest you start with 8 minutes, then work up to 12 minutes. Don’t worry about doing a full hour per week! The first 8 minutes will help you learn how to practice in an organized manner.
A quick note before we continue…
In this lesson, I am not going to teach you anything new. Most of these are examples I’ve found online. They are not “the” solution, and I would strongly recommend you experiment with different solos and techniques before making your final decision.
If you are thinking about learning the guitar solo, that you’ll start with one guitar part and expand later, then you may want to consider starting off with a simple solo that is a “warm up”, to get you warmed up. By the time you’ve finished the warm up, you’ll be playing a fully-blown solo that contains many of the same techniques and concepts as the first, and then you can focus on progressing from there with time.
If you are thinking about learning soloing or learning how to play a certain part, just as important, is learning how to understand how you’re going to play the part, and when you plan to play it. I’ve talked in countless blog posts and discussions about “play through” and “feel through” concepts. Don’t let yourself put in any more effort than you need just to learn the next part…or the next. Do not let yourself waste time playing only what is convenient.
So, let’s start by introducing you to the basics of guitar practice. I am going to teach you the basics of solos and how to practice at home. I am going to show you the techniques and positions you’ll need for each part in each lesson, and which positions will give you the most opportunity to play them.
The final thing we’re going to look at is a quick preview at what comes next:
But before we do that, let’s take a look at…
What is Guitar Soloing?
For most guitar teachers, “solos” are a bit elusive to explain. The general meaning of the word seems to be a series of guitar parts that sound good together. To simplify things a bit, I’m going to talk about what I think we mean, and then break down what all of the parts mean, if you don’t already know them.
Here’s what I mean by soloing:
The concept of solos is a way of playing a certain part of a song
