My personal favorite was the guitar, I love to play jazz and blues. But it could take a long time for me to get into a certain instrument. I always seem to have to spend an hour per song practicing because I really hate to sit there and practice in a small room.
You are known to create intricate melodies with your fingers. Is that something you’ve mastered?
I love melody. It was something I learned from my grandmother, she’s my music teacher. Her songs can take you to your heart, to your soul. I had to learn that lesson, I had to hear how my grandmother lived her life and I could recreate that in my songs and do the same thing with my voice. I think I’ve been able to do that with some of my songs. Some of the melodies and chords were developed while writing new songs. When I listen to my old songs, I hear melodies I’ve learned from my grandma. I think her music has helped me in a lot of ways and I love it.
How did you first come across music? Did you ever listen to anything other than classical music?
The first music I tried was classical. Now I think I’m more of a classical guy, I love music. When I was growing up, we didn’t have any radio. I remember I used to listen to the National or the BBC, and the Beatles, they were on all the time. Then I remember my parents going to the library and discovering a lot of classical music, and also I listened to a lot of Motown. But that’s the last song a lot of my parents like to listen to for me. Some classic records were the Beatles and The Monkees.
In your opinion, the most important thing about music is the emotions it can inspire. How would you compare the two?
It certainly gives you different possibilities in life because you can have a dream that you can fulfill, you can believe in, and you can really feel like someone has your back. That has been the greatest inspiration for me, even though I try to keep my life simple. I have a dream that I can fulfill a dream that I have. That’s why I like the idea of music playing a big part in my life. I don’t play an instrument because I feel I know enough. I don’t have a piano to play because I don’t have a natural ability. I just try to find my own way and see what happens. It’s very important to me
