This post is about the style I prefer. You’ll need a little background on the history of illustration.

History

The first illustration style was the style prevalent in the Middle Ages. A style known as the “Kilroy-style” comes from the medieval author Colorteurs.

Here’s an example of their work:

Colorteurs were masters of hand-drawn and detailed depictions of events. They were also artists who drew from the ancient manuscripts and manuscripts from the Middle Ages.

A common pattern of their work was illustrated scenes which focused on characters in the midst of a scene. This was a style popular between the 11th and 13th half of the 15th Century.

The next generation of Kilroy-style artists added a style to these pictorial scenes which evolved into the first “Chrome” style.

As the term “Chrome” came into use it came to be used most commonly for engravings instead of painted designs. An engraving is a representation taken from a page of text, usually in a book.

Chrome works have been used for centuries by medieval, Renaissance and early Modern artists.

As the 17th century and into the early modern era saw the growth of printing, “C” forms began to take off. This meant that each letter of the alphabet had a distinctive color that would highlight the point of the “C” shape.

As the use of the “C” in illustrations increased, artists began drawing “C” drawings over “C” and “D” forms.

The “C” became so well-known that some artists began to avoid the use of it in their drawings and often painted the letters in “D”.

“E” became a common word that came to refer to the shape itself, often in quotation marks. This word often referred to the shape as a “Egon” or an “Egonal” shape.

In modern times a “Morph” version of the “C” often refers to a drawing of a character which incorporates a few characteristics of a drawing of the letter “M”. These are often used for children’s drawings.
