I started drawing when I was a kid, when I had very sketchy black and white pencil sketch books. I was a big fan of David Foster Wallace, and I think he had influenced me in something way back. The stuff that he wrote is very different from the stuff that’s in a normal book. The first book, Infinite Jest, was all white on black; in The Corrections, you get the same thing, but the pages are full of color. I started to just let it flow.
Are you afraid of any of your characters?
Oh yeah. I’m a very fearful person. I’m really scared when I’m making anything. I guess the big thing about me is that I like to see things through a certain prism. I’m afraid when I see anything going forward, so I’m a little afraid of people. I don’t like going out and doing drugs, or anything. I’ve always tried my best not to fall into that trap. Not that I don’t enjoy being high and dancing, but I think there’s something inherently scary about doing that. I like not falling into anything, just so I can be honest about my character.
Do you like to cook?
Yeah, I love cooking. I’ve always had really good chefs. They’re all good people. I’m not like that at all, so it hasn’t been an issue and I don’t really need to be.
Are you allowed to do improv with a lot of your characters?
I don’t really do improv, although I’ve got a lot of friends who do and I just find it funny to be with them all the time. But sometimes we get together and we’ll just do weird things and I really enjoy that. That’s kind of my favorite thing to do, improvising with my friends.
What are you reading right now?
I’m reading a lot of books now. My friend Kevin Smith sent me a bunch of books and stuff. He’s getting older and reading more and more, so I’m not going to waste his time. It’s really cool to be able to read books you’ve read.
What are some of your favorite authors you’ve read?
I like Ayn Rand. The Matrix series, I really enjoyed the movies. I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings, too. I really enjoyed those books a lot.
I like David Foster Wallace. That was a very special book to me and one I
