A: I think I can start drawing in just a few months. I would say it is very possible, but I need to get into the habit of sitting down and drawing every day. I don’t really follow the rule of “I draw every day” as much as I can.
Q: Do you like it because it is fun, or can it be dangerous?
A: I guess it depends. I like it because it is fun, but I also enjoy doing it a bit dangerous. It is a great challenge. At least I always make sure that I am properly protected if I need to.
Q: In what situations do you feel safe?
A: At home and during the holidays. I enjoy going out so much and it is not always safe if people don’t know I am doing it. At the same time I am not doing anything to be a threat to someone’s life, so I’m fine with going out and making myself a target. Sometimes my friends and family members are not as willing to protect me. I love meeting strangers and meeting new people and it is also great when I meet people of my own skin color. I was really lucky to be able to meet a Mexican woman and even though I am Mexican myself I still enjoy learning more about her culture and I can see her sense of humor on a deeper level. I think it is a way for me to connect with my own culture in the most comfortable way.
Q: You draw all the time, but it is strange to get people to recognize you when it is all over. What is different now that you have made people say you are beautiful?
A: There are so many different ways that people use, if they recognize that I have drawn them or they have stopped and taken a photo with me that is a wonderful feeling. But there is nothing more gratifying than when people see a picture of me and they recognize me and ask me for help or tell me that I look beautiful too and that they appreciate what I do. That is what is really cool.
Q: When you do get compliments the compliments are usually not positive, so how can they be positive to you.
A: I am just grateful. When people see my work they are often amazed that I draw anything at all. They say things like, “wow, how cool, how beautiful,” and “why so dark?” I just find that it is pretty funny when people compliment me on my drawings.
