A lot of people (particularly older folks) will say 2b pencils are meant for writing. There’s no denying that writing can help us develop our writing skill, for sure. But most people will also use 2b pencils as some sort of “lung tissue” or “joint tissue” filler to create a more comfortable writing and/or drawing experience. I like to refer to 2b pencils as “muscling in” and “flexing”. These are all good things, but it’s important to keep it in perspective: The difference between a 2b pencil and a 5 or 6c pencil isn’t as big between a 2b and a 5 pencil as you might think.

I agree: The main difference between a 2b pencil and a 5 or 6c pencil is that there are 2 ways to write with them. The standard 2b pencil has just the flat side against the paper. This is the most common way for people to write on the page. The other option is to bend in the 2b pencil and twist it in your hand in a “fling” or “giddyup” motion. You might even do some form of a jig on this if you’re using the 2b pencil to write for kids (or a person with short fingers). That’s a relatively new option in which 2b pencils have become very popular. People who only want to write on the ground are often using the 2b pencil for this purpose.
When I use 2b pencils for drawing or working on my computer, I usually bend in the side a little bit and pull it in further while drawing. This helps provide a “smoother” writing experience for me. I’m usually using a 2b pencil in my sketch book, and I usually take advantage of it by looking at what I’m drawing to determine how much I want to draw with it. For example, I usually sketch up my ideas quickly on a piece of paper with the 2b pencil and put it away for later. But I also want my drawing to be really smooth and comfortable. When I go back and do my drawing, I’ll often have to try multiple 2b pencils to get the same look I wanted.
What’s a 2b pencil for as a sketching pencil?
