Well, it takes a lot of work! I can’t get rid of my drawing pad. It’s my favorite thing to do. When people say things like “I’m so drawn to that drawing you’ve put on top of all” they think I’m obsessed! No, it’s more like I’m obsessed with you, and you’re obsessed with me.
Where do you draw your best? There are so many people that I draw that are amazing. I’m just so grateful that I have this amazing art teacher, Dr. Laura Krantz at Harvard where I have one of my favorite art classes each week, and Dr. Krantz is a fabulous artist, and she and her husband Greg (who is a teacher himself!) have taught me a ton of great lessons about art in my life. It’s definitely one of the hardest things about drawing, but it’s incredibly rewarding.
What is your best technique for drawing? My best technique? I do whatever works for me. I just start with the pencil I am going to use, and then I just draw it from there. It can be very simple, or in between the lines, or from one direction to another. And I draw it with a very small brush, I usually do that in the margins because drawing in the margins makes it a bit more manageable, but it’s the only way I can get it right without trying too hard.
Who was your favorite character/creator to draw? Just people who I like and know. I think that we all have to look in the mirror and think “Who makes me feel this way?” when we’re drawing, and I think that everybody has to do that. I’m not an expert, but I’m definitely a fan of all of them because they are both fantastic and also inspiring to me.
Do you go in to each art class knowing what you are going to get or going in knowing that you may never see the finished art again? Yes, I go in knowing that it might be never. I like it when it doesn’t get finished; you never know what’s going to happen. You have to go the extra mile to really like something. That’s really important to me, you don’t want to do something and think you’re going to dislike it, because then you can’t do something else. I think that one of the things to remember when creating is that you want it to be great, and you can’t force something into it. You have to let it go
