Do police dogs get paid?

That depends. The law that protects our dogs also protects us from liability. “We are the government, so if our dogs are in a situation that is potentially dangerous or potentially dangerous to other people, they need our help,” said Michael C. Smith, the chief deputy in charge of the office that oversees dog licensing and inspections.

Dog licenses cost $65, with an additional $5 for the license.

Inspections are at $200 and inspections are $50. There is also a $50 fee for dogs that have been trained to alert to human sounds. The owner of that dog then must surrender the dog to the city.

If you have a question about Dog license fees or dog licensing, call 311:

Dog license fee: $65 (dog licenses can be purchased at participating retailers)

Dog inspection: $200 (if it qualifies)

Dog license: $50 (if it does not qualify)

Dog license: Free if it is the city’s animal protection officer-trained dog

Inspection fee: $50 (if it qualifies)

Dog license: $50 (if it does not qualify)

Dog license: Free if it is the city’s animal protection officer-trained dog

What if my dog is not up to code or doesn’t alert if humans enter the yard?

The answer is no matter the problem. Police are required to perform inspections after every arrest in every community.

How does Seattle’s licensing process work?

If your dog is unlicensed, your license will expire within 30 days. If your dog is licensed but your dog doesn’t alert in a reasonable time frame and there is no other legal, humane justification for its arrest, then your dog is not an “officer” and so will not be fingerprinted or recorded.

If the officer is cited for an infraction by police or a complaint is filed, the officer receives notice within 20 business days. Failure to appear in court or to make an appearance can result in a fine between $175 and $2,500 and possible jail time. If the dog is not available for a license evaluation after 15 business days, the police will not issue a registration card and if the police do come by, that dog has been suspended and will remain on hold until we can pick it up. If the dog isn’t available for a license evaluation within 15 days then the officer will have to return the dog for a licensing evaluation.
