(CNN) The political media and the Republican Party have an existential crisis on their hands: How much of the president’s agenda will people actually like? How much will they care?
This week’s events in Texas reminded me of an episode from “Hazing,” the 1998 film featuring a family that grows increasingly despondent over the endless hounding the family is subjected to. I vividly recall the way the family tried to fight back — at one point, the family is forced to sleep outside in a freezing rain, only to awaken to find that one of their dogs had a bullet in its skull.
But when the family tries to break free of the pressure, the dogs return, kill them, and return to the family.
The same dynamic plays out over and over.
It’s one thing for the President to sign the Paris Climate Agreement and get a bunch of the world’s elite to sign off on it. It’s quite another for one of the world’s elite — Donald Trump — to be able to do it himself without Senate consent or a single Republican vote in the process.
