We know that a degree isn’t all it’s cracked up to be–that’s not necessarily a bad thing. For many people, it can be a worthwhile investment to spend the time, money, frustration, and even stress for a degree in photography.
But there’s more to a degree than just what it’s name suggests. And although the benefits of becoming a photographer will only likely exist for a lifetime, a degree is still an investment that can pay off over multiple years.
The benefit of owning a photography degree is that you’ve already started with the knowledge that you can do photography. Your knowledge is valuable! When it comes to photography, being aware and having a plan to get to know yourself are the key elements that make you a better photographer.
With that in mind, I’ll give you a few pointers to start your photography education off right.
Step 1: Choose your location
Choosing a particular location or location type is important first thing you need to do. You need to take into consideration what your current location looks like or why it’s an ideal location for you.
Choosing a location that has access to any part of it should be the first objective of your photography education. If you have to deal with a lot of rain/light, you wouldn’t choose a sunny location because of this. If you have to deal with snow, then you won’t choose it because of this…that’s why choosing a location with no access to any part is important.
If the location has access to both sides of it, but one side is dry, then that side is your destination.
If you don’t know the answer to this question, then don’t worry–there’s always “the right place at the right time.” Don’t fall into the trap of “photography is all about location” as it will not pay you off.
Step 2: Write a detailed plan
What you say and how you say it–this is what will shape the rest of your photography education. Write out a plan that describes a plan for your future photography career. Make the plan so clear and concise that anyone can follow your steps, even if they only have limited knowledge on photography.
A detailed plan will also include examples of how to carry out your plan. This is the most important step for making sure the future photography education will be successful. There’s no point in planning at the beginning if you have no example of how you will execute on
