The Obama administration had made its decision on Tuesday to close the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. But that didn’t mean the move was a done deal.

The news came less than 48hours before President Obama left on a two-day diplomatic trip overseas. The timing couldn’t be worse for U.S. relations with Libya, where the Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi has led to a diplomatic crisis.

The State Department and U.S. Embassy in Tripoli have already begun the process of putting diplomats out of a job — a move some analysts say is being made more to appease Western allies than to protect U.S. personnel. The decision to shutter the Benghazi consulate came the day after the State Department gave the Libyan government the green light to ask for American help in the investigation into the attack.

That was no coincidence either, analysts say.

“There is concern that the process could be politicized. That seems likely,” said one U.S. official close to the administration. “This is a very good-faith exercise. Nobody was trying to politicize it.”

The decision to close the consulate in Benghazi, the official added, could “potentially jeopardize a lot of Americans.”

A State Department official said Tuesday night that the State Department “has been clear that there’s a timeline for the end of support to the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi” and “the closure of missions around the world is part of the planning process.”
