How the Republican establishment is trying to bury a scandal that will doom Hillary Clinton’s presidential candidacy
At first glance, the Republican National Committee and its allies in the media would have you think that the email scandal swirling around Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, is a non-story. The DNC had already spent millions of dollars trying to ensure she would defeat Donald Trump, and after his shocking win, it’s now trying to save itself from itself.
But that’s far from the case.

A new CNN/ORC poll shows Hillary Clinton holding a slight lead over Donald Trump, but a troubling lead in a head-to-head matchup. Among likely voters, Clinton has a 46-38 percent lead over Trump, with Libertarian Gary Johnson receiving two percent of the vote.
The email scandal, which had been widely reported over the past weeks, isn’t only a concern for the Democrats and the media, it’s also a huge problem for the Republicans and the media, as well.
Trump is a master of the media. The billionaire has built a gigantic media machine, with a number of large newspapers and television stations as his clients. It’s why he is so well-positioned for the GOP nomination. He already has a great following, and his campaign has spent untold sums of money, on television, direct mail, voter mobilization and a variety of other efforts to boost his candidacy. And the media is in cahoots.
“From the very beginning that is the problem, Donald Trump,” RNC communications director Sean Spicer told reporters shortly after the poll was released. “We certainly aren’t going to be able to spend a ton of dollars on media to keep him off the air. He will know when his numbers go up. He is already well positioned for the nomination. Our campaign has been doing the same thing for four years. This is the time to focus on his weaknesses but what we’re going to do here is, continue talking about a number of areas.”
And he’s right: Since the beginning of 2015, the RNC has spent at least $4.3 million lobbying for its position about Hillary Clinton’s eligibility to hold office.
