In the days after the terrorist attack in Paris that killed 130 people, many of us asked our friends across the country: Just how can we be so ignorant to the world around us, and so unprepared for it?
But I’m just not so sure we could have been much more ignorant that we allowed ourselves to believe the news reports we’d already read, let alone the stories we’d just seen, because of the way we see the world. We’re so afraid of being wrong that the only way to stay ahead of the crowd is to follow the crowd, to assume the worst, to trust everything we hear and read.
At least this is what I believed before this summer. And it made some sense to me. But lately, I’ve started to wonder: Was my sense of what’s right or right and wrong based on the truth or what the world wants to be told me?
In the wake of the shooting in Las Vegas last weekend, I wrote a column headlined, “Don’t go with your gut.”
I wrote, for example, that gun dealers ought to “pay their employees more.” I said that I was “skeptical of some of the stories about how the Vegas gunman received high-paying jobs with the FBI.” And I noted that it seemed certain that the suspect was no longer a U.S. citizen, and he had legally bought his weapons.
