While there is a lot of information out there about pole dancing, I wanted to focus in on the specific aspects that keep pole dancers new and excited.
I know pole dance has changed over time – I personally came to pole dancing through gyms and dance instructors – I also went through years of gymnastics but stopped doing it after one year in a gym gym – while still dancing there, I was pretty much a total beginner in pole dancing. After a year of trying my best to get the fundamentals, even though I had done gymnastics every opportunity I could, there really didn’t appear to be anything that would turn my back to working in the gym again.
The reason why isn’t that I don’t think I would ever make it as a dancer or anything. But I think it’s something more about that constant curiosity in life. It’s something I’d love to keep. I just wanted to see if I could teach. A lot of the early challenges that I faced were the basics. I just have to keep working on them, which, while they’re still in my head, they feel more solid. I’m working on my moves, improving my timing, and I don’t just want to go through a cycle after a few weeks. I need to get it right before that and I feel like pole dancing can become that.
Is it difficult to learn how to pole dance?
I think when I started doing dance, it was just like any other other dance class: “I need to learn this move and try it”. But with pole dancing, once you are able to go from trying it to being on stage is really exciting for me. We’ve had dancers and coaches tell us how amazing it is to be able to work with their legs and make that leap. It’s pretty amazing. You feel it.
When I was in the dance program as a freshman, what I needed to do to start doing the moves I wanted was practice with the instructor, so I’d learn to do the moves, then I wanted to learn how to perform them with my leg. So I would watch choreographies where dancers did it differently, I wanted to do the moves and I would find something that I knew from my body language and body position, with my legs like right there and then (like doing a split and then a split right afterwards), I would just focus on dancing that.
Then, I got to the point where it looked like you couldn’t even do that part, but
