No. A pole dancer is just as much into the music and the energy of it as any other dancer, and it’s all about the dance. Most of the things I have done, with some variations and variations, have been on the dance floor or in a club. It’s not the kind of thing I would do in the classroom.
Q: How does a dancer’s gender influence in their ability to perform?
In the classroom you can’t expect to learn much about a dance if you don’t know who your classmates are as a whole. In a class this size, it’s not possible.
In order to create the type of dance we’re teaching, we have to be able to teach in the classroom that is the exact same as what students are doing in the dance studio. I think that’s probably the hardest thing about being a dancer in this type of business. When I’m teaching here, I don’t want any students to learn the same thing I learned in my studio. They’ll be learning in different environments and with different people.
You’d be hard pressed to find an instructor who would know that I have been at this for eight years and that I’ve never learned a new move, I’ve never moved on that side of my body. If you could see me in my studio, it would be in the middle of that wall.
You would find no one to teach you how to move your hips and how we do that. So it’s very challenging when you try to teach someone. You find it difficult to be able, as a teacher who has been doing it for almost 20 years, to find someone to teach you how to do things the way you were doing them before, that’s what it’s been like.
I haven’t heard of a great deal of women who can do what I can, nor have I heard of a great deal of men who can dance the way I am, nor have I heard of anybody who has been able to make a living doing what I was able to do. And certainly not on any schedule. And for some reason, so many women can’t make a living, I’m pretty sure this is at least in part because they can’t learn with the type of knowledge that I’ve been able to pass on to them.
