What’s the Difference Between Depression and Anxiety?
As discussed below, depression is characterized by feelings of emotional pain that don’t go away. Anxiety is a general mental health disorder that is marked by anxiety and worry. One may experience excessive worry, and anxiety can be related to chronic pain, depression, or a combination of the two.
Some examples of anxiety and depression disorders are major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder. When it is diagnosed, most people diagnosed with an anxiety disorder experience at least one episode of panic attacks daily or at least four times a week, usually within the past three months and one to four times per week. Depression is characterized by feelings of sadness and emptiness. Depression is similar to major depressive disorder, but it is more likely to occur more often.
In both cases, anxiety is present—even though no specific event or situation is triggering the physical symptoms. Both disorders are also characterized by physical symptoms, such as sleep problems, stomach aches, and poor appetite, that cause significant stress and anxiety and can be alleviated with medication. Most people with anxiety and depression feel unwell, even if they don’t have symptoms for days.
