We’ve all heard of the world’s largest solar flare ever, the 787. Now, researchers have come up with a more terrifying estimate as to what a 5-second space weather event could look like. Astronomers and astrophysicists at the University of Hawaii claim to have come up with a more accurate assessment for all kinds of “space weather” effects.
In a paper published last week in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the team claimed to have estimated what such an event might look like. Specifically, the researchers studied the brightness of the sun’s atmosphere before, during and after major space weather events, and compared their data against the ones published and analyzed before and after the event.
The result? An uptick in the Earth’s magnetic field, a dramatic increase in the solar wind (a highly charged stream of free electrons that blows at approximately 80 miles per hour), and a change in the amount of energy (energy density) that reaches Earth. “This would be a powerful disturbance to the electrical equipment,” said the paper’s lead author Dr. Paul Gagliano, “and it would be visible for millions of miles.”

The team also provided a graphic showing how the effect of the space weather on a particular electronics device would vary over time, showing that it was likely to get worse over time as the area of influence became more intense.
Even though there are currently no signs that the current event is more than a flare, the researchers do say it could lead to a more catastrophic event in the years to come, noting that the intensity of the effects would likely depend on the initial size of the resulting shockwave, as well as the amount of solar radiation hitting Earth.
Though the amount of damage is uncertain, the team did say that
