I am so excited to be working at the Museum. As the first person from my school to get into the Department of Culture and Media Arts, it was really exciting to watch how quickly my peers got involved. I have seen friends and peers start graffiti when they are 11 or 12, and many of them are now 30. It was a great opportunity for us to take a very hands-on approach to educating young people about the art form. I have already had fun discovering new techniques to make these stencils better, as many of the graffiti artists here have found new skills in the job. It also taught me the importance of patience, keeping it simple and making it your own as much as possible. It is also fun to be the first one to come in for advice as I try to teach everyone what to use.
Did you have fun working with the staff?
I was so happy with the people we got to collaborate with on the job site, especially when the kids got excited by the idea of putting up the stencils and doing some basic stencil painting that day!
The stencils were fun, as I’ve had to create them on the spot. I love it when people are like, “This is the best thing I have ever done! I can’t wait for you to put this on the wall!” It definitely makes people happy to see new pieces, and it really brings the community together.
What was your favorite day at the School?
I loved working in museums. I had never worked in a museum before I was in the School. The art and decor are always so beautiful and the learning opportunities are amazing. Each day has its own personality and I definitely got to work with some really amazing and talented people.
How did you go about finding the school?
I came across the school by accident. I saw an article in a school publication about an upcoming school exhibition in San Francisco. So I called the head coach who had been talking about the school to see if they had anything to share. We ended up having lunch together, and he said that he was interested in starting a website that would have free art lessons for the kids.
What is your favorite part about working at the San Francisco Museum of Art?
It’s really interesting to hear about other school teachers who love the Museum as much as I do, and just the amount of talented people that come through when the students are in the building. It is really a fantastic
