The answer is “no,” but it does matter. There are some differences in how the food that we eat goes from production to consumption. Food that is processed is typically stored in the refrigerator (or even freezer when cooking). Food that has been cooked or fried will tend to shrink in size over time. If you look at a typical piece of white bread and you are looking for a nice crisp crust, it might be the same length as what you have in your oven.
Food that is already cooked or fried is typically on the drier side and tends to stay crunchier longer. The thing is, even though food is usually on the crispy side, food should not be considered “crunchy” before it is cooked and stored.
Food that has sat out, sat out overnight, sat on the floor, in the refrigerator, in the freezer, in the microwave, or in an airtight container for too long can soften. If some of the flavor in that food is lost, there is some flavor loss as well.
So what do we do? We have different types of equipment (grillers, baking pots, etc.) to help preserve food and ensure the flavor stays as well as possible. Some foods, like a piece of bread, will require the most effort and time to cook. They are usually better left to dry out overnight in the refrigerator for a while. When cooking a piece of bread, there are more options than in the case of a white bread. You can peel it, turn it, baste it, or even roll it.
What about foods that are already fried? This is a tricky one to answer because fried food usually involves a lot of things, such as oil, and heat. It is a good idea to make sure that the food you cook is not a significant heat source to begin with. Many fried foods are very crispy at the outer edges where most of the fat has been separated and removed. You can also cook many foods to a very crisp and crispiness once they have been fried. Even if an foods is good and doesn’t need the most effort to cook, you must remember that a fryer is a heat source and that if you are going to be frying an element, it is often best not to cook the outer edges of the element itself because they will get really crispy.
